ATHLETICS: ROBERT Warensjo is hoping to end his season on another high after making a significant breakthrough in the City of Bath Open meeting, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The 16-year-old Swindon Harrier will bring his summer to an end in the Woking Open on Sunday and if he can repeat, if not better, the form he showed in Bath's popular Bank Holiday Monday meeting then Warensjo will be delighted.

At Bath University a summer of frustration was swept aside as the Ridgeway School student from Wanborough soared to 4.20m to not only add 20 cms to his personal best but also win the Under 17 men's competition in what amounted to his best performance of the season to date.

"It was really good and I'm delighted with that," said Warensjo.

"I have been jumping well this summer but just have not been getting the results. I have cleared 4.00m, equalling my previous PB, several times but just couldn't get over 4.10m.

"I just couldn't get things right - until Monday!"

Warensjo sailed over 4.00m and then 4.20m before his competition came to an end at 4.30m.

"I think I was a bit over-excited by then and possibly a little tired," added a delighted Warensjo.

"It is nice to end the season on a high and that now means I have added 25cms to my best this summer."

Warensjo's jump moves him up from 12th to seventh equal in the UK Under 17 rankings and coach Tim Snowdon said the teenager's success was fully deserved.

"Robert has been working very hard but things just weren't going his way so I am delighted for him," said Snowdon."

Another Harrier winner at the Bath meeting was middle distance runner Ben Scarlett. Scarlett continued his recent good form to win the senior men's 800m in a time of 1mins 55.6secs, just over a second outside his personal best.

Competing in the Under 17s age group Becky Lawrence finished runner-up in both the long and triple jump events.

The 16-year-old, who is coached by Tony Jackson, recorded a best of 5.01m in the long jump and 10.49 in the triple jump.

Both events were won by Yate's Jade Ellans, who is the South West representative for the triple jump at the forthcoming UK School Games, in Glasgow. Lawrence is on standby as reserve.
