CIRENCESTER Golf Club held their senior captain’s day which attracted around 60 golfers.

Seniors captain Clive Bennett, who hosted the event, arranged for the competition to be a non-qualifying event which allowed the day to include an element of fun as well as spurring the competitors towards coveted trophies and valuable prizes.

Seniors’ wives and Clive himself provided welcome hospitality at the halfway house.

Graham Morgan put together some super golf to take the overall prize, the Captains Vase.

A variation on a normal stableford competition where points scored on three selected holes were doubled meant that the winning score would likely be in the mid forties.

The fact that Graham amassed 49 points, at an age where most players are just about hanging on to their handicap mark, tells you much about his focus and dedication.

Richard Rollett scored 47 points and in doing so captured the trophy for the over 75 group.

Golf clothing and equipment were the prizes for the best three players in each of two divisions and in a crowded club house these were presented by Seniors captain Bennett.

Division One was headed by Evan Jarrett with 47 points ahead of second placed Gordon Stone with 45 points and John Parsons also with 45 points in third place on countback.

Ray Russell took the Division Two title with 46 points, the same as Mike Margave who came second on countback. David Neale was third with 44 points.

A prize for the straightest drive was given to Dick Tugwell while club captain Mark Woodhead and Evan Jarrett won prizes for their nearest the pin efforts.

Meanwhile Cirencester’s local derby produced a 4-2 win for rivals South Cerney.

Philip Morris and David Taylor won the opening match for Cerney before Dave Mitchell and Phil Stansfield extended the hosts’ lead.

Cirencester got a their first and only outright win when Chris Berens and Dave Walters took their match by 4&2.

Two halved matches then ensured an interesting finale and Peter Jubb and Mike Lusty had a tight tussle before taking their match by 1 up over Cirencester's Graham Morgan and Mike Bond.
