MATT Mumford added the Wrag Barn Club Championship trophy to the Men’s Championship trophy he won back in May to complete a unique feat in the clubs history recently.

Mumford to become only the third player, along with John James and Martin Sell to ever hold both these major trophies in the same year, add to that his course record 66 set back in June and its been quite a year for the 19 year old +1 (plus one) handicapper.

Mumford is now seriously targetting the pro ranks due to the success he’s enjoyed this year. Speaking to the Adertiser the 19-year-old was clearly delighted with his performance.

“I’m really, really happy, it’s the one I really wanted to win all year, to win the Men’s Championships and Club Championships in the same year is a big achievement,” he said.

“I think I’m a lot more confident and comfortable with my game, I’ve been working really hard on my short game and my putting.

“On the back nine of my second round I holed a lot of clutch par saving putts to keep momentum. Then I played a tricky shot on 17 and to settle me down for the 18th, I didn’t know what score I would need to shoot at that point but luckily mine was good enough.

“When I was younger I wanted to have my name on the board for all three, the Junior, Men’s and the Club Championships and now I’ve done that. I think I’m one of only a few to have that so it’s really going well.

“It’s definitely made my mind up about turning pro. If I keep playing this well then I think I can make it in the pro leagues next year.”

The tournamet was not plain sailing for Mumford though with juniors Jack Seaman, Max Drayton and Max Mulcock setting the early pace.

Though Mumford’s first round score of a one under par 71 was enough to take the lead into the afternoon.

In almost perfect conditions the leaders went out after lunch. Drayton was first back, signing for a 75 to add to his 74 leaving him five over for the championship.

Next in was Mulcock with a round of 71 one under par, now leaving him level for the day at 144 and setting a tough target in the clubhouse.

The following group saw Seaman add a 74 to his morning 75, but an afternoon round of 71 by Dan Pulham saw him race up the leader board to149, five over par.

Mumford needed a par on the last to take the title to pip Mulcock and a nervous two putt meant he carded another 71 leaving him on 142, two under par for the day and the tournament winner.
