DAVID Howell missed the cut at the Irish Open after he could only post a level par 71 in yesterday’s second round.

The damage was done for Swindon ace Howell in the first round at Royal County Down Golf Club in Northern Ireland as he shot 77 to finish six over par.

The Broome Manor pro needed an exceptional performance on Friday to give him a chance of making the weekend and, teeing off at the tenth, started perfectly with a two under par front nine.

He pulled back another shot on the first – his 10th – but that good work was undone with bogeys on his 12th, 14th and 17th holes bringing Howell back to even par for the day.

There is a six-way tie at the top of the leaderboard on three-under, with big names Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald lurking dangerously, just one shot behind.
