BROOME Manor’s Mark Sandry had to settle for third place in the Hills Wiltshire Professionals’ Golf Championship at Marlborough Golf Club.

The tournament was won by former South Cerney pro Ross Langdon, who is now playing out of Gloucester, after he beat Andy Beal, of Salisbury & South Wilts, in a sudden-death play-off.

Perfect conditions prevailed throughout the day and 26 of Wiltshire’s professional golfers took part in the 36-hole event.

After the morning round, Beal was leading by one-under-par, second place was a tie between Simon Shanks (Bowood) and Ross McCance of Chippenham, both on one-over par.

Sandry, Craig Bell (Cumberwell Park), Barry Forster (North Wilts) and Graham Laing (North Wilts) were all tied for third on two-over.

At this stage, Langdon was tied in fifth place with Dan Carter, of Upavon, and Henry Pallas, of Hamptworth.

The afternoon round saw Beal off to a fantastic start with an eagle on the first hole, which he followed up with two birdies, giving him a strong four-under-par lead after the first nine holes. Langdon also produced a good first nine, with four birdies putting him at three under.

The second nine proved disappointing for Beal after a triple bogey and two further bogeys left him at one over for the round. Langdon managed two birdies on his second nine but two bogeys gave him a level 36.

Overall, both players finished their day on level par to force the play-off over holes 10 and 18.

Langdon’s birdie on the par five 10th hole secured him a two-shot victory.
