SWINDON’S David Howell will have to wait until tomorrow morning to see if he has made the cut at The Open.

Howell will have to complete his second round at St Andrews at 7am tomorrow morning after heavy rain curtailed play.

Swindon ace Howell enjoyed a strong opening round at the Home of Golf on Thursday by shooting a four-under-par 68 to finish just three shots off the overnight lead held by American Dustin Johnson.

However, players were greeted by wet weather in Scotland this morning and only the first two groups were able to tee off before play on the Old Course was suspended for more than three hours because parts of the course were waterlogged.

Howell had to wait until 6.43pm to get his second round underway, with the Broome Manor pro facing only being able to complete a handful of holes before play was called off for the evening.

Howell, and the rest of the players who were still out on the course, and made a steady start to proceedings in falling light as he opened with six straight pars.

However his round took a turn for the worse when he dropped shots with bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes.

With the light getting worse all the time, Howell was able to respond immediately with a birdie on the ninth before his round was brought to an end.

Play stopped just after legendary golfer Tom Watson, who has won the famous tournament five times, finished on the 18th hole for the last time in his career, to an emotional reception.

Howell will be back underway at 7am from the tenth tee on three-under-par, with the projected cut at level par as it stands.

America’s Dustin Johnson remains the overnight leader on 10-under-par, with the 43-year-old re-starting his round on the 14th tee tomorrow.
