DAVID Howell is confident that if he keeps putting himself in the right positions then a win is just around the corner, as he aims to be king of the mountains in Switzerland.

Rest has been the main order of the week for Howell after an energy-sapping Open Championship took its toll on mind and body.

Howell was caught out by the weather and saw his second round span more than 24 hours after two re-starts.

The Broome Manor pro finished well down the field in tied 49th place as a result, but his confidence has not been knocked as he aims for a first win of the season at the Omega European Masters this weekend “I still feel like I am swinging the club well and I feel good about my game,” said Howell, who is currently 20th in the Race To Dubai rankings.

“I just have to keep playing well.

“In golf we all want to win tournaments and I will get to a point if I keep giving myself chances to win and not doing it, then at some point that will become frustrating.

“At the moment it is just a lot of fun getting myself into position and we have just got to keep trying to do that and I am sure the win will come.”

The tournament, held at Crans-sur-Sierre, has been brought forward from its usual September date and Howell is looking to secure a top 25 finish at the tournament for the first time since 2009.

“This week is going to be about finding the energy to get up for another big tournament,” he added.

“We’re playing at a different time of year this year, so it is going to be a lot warmer and it is going to feel a little bit different.

“It is a fiddly little course, but it is always a fun week.

“I have played reasonably well there in recent years. Nothing to challenge a win or anything, but I feel like I have played quite nicely.”

Howell tees off this morning at 7.35am from the 10th tee, alongside Daniel Brooks and Thaworn Wiratchant.
