SWINDON’S David Howell had a day to forget as he crashed out of the US PGA Championship with a round of six-over-par.

Howell saw his chances of making the weekend at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, capitulate on the back nine, having pulled himself up to level par at one stage on day two.

The 40-year-old got off to the worst start when he dropped a shot on the first hole, as he began his day on the 10th.

Howell drove too long to find the rough with his first shot and was forced to lay up short of the green with his second.

That left him with a 19 foot putt for par but he missed by an inch to card a five on the par-four hole.

Howell continued to slip down the field as he made a mess of the 12th hole.

Having found the rear green-side bunker with his tee shot, Howell was left with no choice but to play out of the back with his second shot before completing an up and down for his second bogey of the round.

The Swindon golfer recovered on the 14th, as his drive left him in the perfect place to attack the pin and he secured a birdie with an 11 foot putt.

Howell then found himself back on level par, and one-over for the tournament, after a nice drive, followed by a perfect approach shot, left him with a nine foot putt for birdie.

The double Ryder Cup winner continued his surge back up the leaderboard with a birdie on the par-three third.

His tee shot attacked the pin and left him with a nine foot putt to move to level par for the tournament, but that is when things took a turn for the worse.

Howell was back to level par for the day the very next hole after a poor second shot left him in the rough to the left of the green and his chip shot left him still in the thick stuff.

He was in more trouble on hole five when his tee shot found the water and Howell had to settle for a bogey to leave him the wrong side of the projected cut.

Howell dropped a further shot on the seventh hole, as his second chip shot ran off the green to leave him in trouble on the par-three hole.

The slide continued on hole eight as he missed the green right with his second shot to card five on the par-four hole.

Howell was ready for the clubhouse when he hit a triple bogey on the final hole.

Having missed the fairway right with his tee shot, Howell found the trees further to the right with his second shot before three putting to end his round on six-over-par.
