DAVID Howell roared back with a vengeance as he clawed himself back up the leaderboard at the WGC-HSBC Champions in the early hours of this morning.

The 40-year-old shot a disappointing one over-par in his opening round at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai yesterday but the Swindon ace is back in contention for a top half finish after carding a fine four under-par in his second outing.

Howell, who won the event 10 years ago, started off the back nine and quickly recovered from a bogey on the par-four 11th with successive birdies on the 13th and 14th holes.

The Broome Manor pro’s upward curve continued as he carded further birdies on the 18th, third and fourth and even a bogey on the par-three sixth couldn’t put a downer on Howell’s day as he quickly racked up his sixth birdie of a sparkling round on the penultimate hole.

The Swindon star’s display leaves him tied 37th on the leaderboard ahead of his third round, which tees off at 1am UK time tomorrow.

American Kevin Kisner is the current leader on 14 under-par.
