DAVID Howell is looking to sign off for the year with a big week at the Race to Dubai.

The Swindon ace has targeted a place in the top 20 of the European Tour rankings for the 2015 season.

Two-time Ryder Cup winner Howell is currently ranked 25th ahead of the final event of the season, which starts tomorrow morning.

“I won’t assess the season properly until after this week, but I came into the final series in 24th place,” Howell said.

“My goal is the top 20 and to do that I need a top-four finish, then I know it will have been a great year.

“But even if I don’t quite make it, this is still my second best year in the last 10 years so I have to be happy with that.

“My only frustration is not converting some of my good weeks into wins. I have had seven top 10 finishes and a bunch of top 20s, so the consistency has been there.”

The Broome Manor pro tees off at 6.35am (GMT) alongside Marc Warren and Howell says that while the Jumeirah Golf Estates field is of the highest quality, there is a different feel to the week.

“It is a bit more relaxed,” he said. “There is more room out on the range, everyone is a little calmer.

“You have got the best players here. We have all worked hard to get here - it is a good atmosphere.

“The weekends here are Fridays and Saturdays and you get some really good crowds which gives it a nice feel.

“It is also good for me as I can stay at my home here.”

Once the Race to Dubai is finished on Sunday, the European Tour’s 2016 campaign will start a week tomorrow in South Africa.

However, Howell will be taking a break until the new year before getting his season underway.

“This is my last hurrah of the 2015 season and I want to go out on a high,” Howell said.

“There was a tournament that I was hoping to do in a couple of weeks time, but it hasn’t quite worked out so I’ll be taking a six-week break after this.”
