SWINDON’S David Howell could not time a late charge at the leaders on the final day of the Omega European Masters.

Howell completed his weekend stay in the Swiss Alps with a one-under-par round of 69 to leave him six-under par in the clubhouse, 11 shots off eventual winner Alex Noren.

The 41-year-old, who is enjoying a renaissance period under new coach Brad Malone, went into the weekend well in contention for the lead of the tournament at Crans-sur-Sierre.

However, a level par round, which would have been enough to keep him on the pace at most other tournaments, saw him slip down the leaderboard.

Things had looked promising for Howell on Saturday when he picked up his first shot with a birdie on the par-four fourth.

However, he followed that up with a bogey five on the sixth to go out with a level-par 35.

The Broome Manor pro dropped another shot on the par-three 11th to move further off the pace but recovered immediately with a birdie on the 12th.

Howell went level par through the final six holes to finish day three on five under-par, lying in tied 25th, eight shots off of overnight leader Scott Hend.

He got off to the perfect start on Sunday morning as he birdied the par-four first for the first time that weekend.

But he was unable to create any early momentum though as he bogeyed the very next hole before dropping another shot on the par-four sixth.

Howell went out in 35 for the third time over the weekend as he picked up a birdie on the par-four seventh.

Another birdie on the par-five 14th saw the Swindon man complete his third under-par round of the tournament as he came home in 34, leaving him tied for 28th spot in the clubhouse.

Sweden's Noren defeated Australia's Scott Hend in a play-off to win the event for the second time, birdieing the first extra hole from 25 feet to claim his second European Tour title of the season and sixth of his career.
