PRIMARY school pupils from across the borough took part in the Swindon Schools finals at Broome Manor Golf Club.

During the past preceding two months, Swindon Premier Golf Academy’s coaches had visited local schools to give pupils the opportunity to try golf, with around 1,800 pupils from 12 schools taking part in the programme.

At each school the Academy taught all Year Four and Five pupils, with the coaches then picking eight players from each school (four boys and four girls) to take part in the grand final at Broome Manor.

The schools taking part were Haydon Wick Primary, Lawn, Lethbridge, Westlea, Southfield, St Marys, St Catherine’s, Wanborough, Mountford Manor, Even Swindon, Ferndale and Shaw Ridge Children took on six different skills challenges, ranging from putting, chipping, driving range and indoor golf, picking up points for their team.

Winning by a narrow margin of five points from Lethbridge were Shaw Ridge on 238 points, with Haydon Wick a further point back.

Broome Manor PGA professional Lee Hayward said: “The day was a huge success for everyone involved. It is a very rewarding day for us to see so many school children buzzing with enthusiasm, working as a team and generally having a good time whilst playing golf.’’
