WRAG Barn Golf Club’s junior organiser Richard Ward has been nominated as a finalist for England Golf’s Volunteer of the Year award.

Ward, who oversaw a stunning year of success at the Highworth club, is one of four finalists for the accolade, the winner of which will be revealed at a dinner at the Royal Lancaster, London, on February 22.

Wrag Barn - represented throughout the season by Guy Drayton, Kyle Campbell, Lewis Ward and Ollie Jeans - won the Wiltshire Junior Knockout competition with a convincing 3-0 victory over Tidworth at Marlborough GC).

It completed a slice of golfing history for the club, with it being the first time any club has won all of the Wiltshire junior team competitions in one year.

Wrag’s roll of honour also included becoming Wiltshire Junior County champions, Wiltshire Junior Team Shield winners, Wiltshire Junior Finals Day winners and Wiltshire Ridgeway League Winners.

Ward was among those selected by the judging panel from a record-breaking entry which throws the spotlight on achievements in golf in England by volunteers, coaches, clubs and counties.

Fellow nominees include Jean Hooper, of Bramley Golf Club in Surrey, Sue Robertson, of the Disabled Golf Association and Jenny Winch, of Test Valley Golf Club, Hampshire England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink said: “We were thrilled by the number and quality of nominations we received and delighted that so many people are helping us to tell golf’s great stories to the wider community.

“Our finalists are all outstanding and we are looking forward to highlighting their successes at our gala dinner and to applauding our winners.”

Meanwhile, Wrag Barn’s Ashleigh Thorne, one of the club’s junior girls and A team league player, has been selected as the Wiltshire Girls County squad Captain for the 2018 season.

The club’s junior section has also been nominated for the Junior Team of the Year award at the 2017 Wiltshire Sports Awards, being organised by the Swindon Advertiser, Wiltshire Gazette & Herald, Wiltshire Times and Wiltshire & Swindon Sport (WASP).
