WRAG Barn Golf Club’s Drayton brothers held their nerve to win the Wiltshire Men’s County Foursomes title after a play-off at Kingsdown Golf Club, near Box.

Max Drayton, the Wrag Barn club champion, and younger brother Guy, Wrag’s junior captain and the junior champion at his club and Broome Manor, prevailed in a sudden-death play-off against Jay Kitching and Simon Futcher (Broome Manor) and Gary Slade and James Cooper (Bowood and Cumberwell Park).

The opening round saw Slade and Cooper (Bowood and Cumberwell Park) tied at the top with David Lewis and Malcolm Ford (Marlborough) on 73 (one over par).

A shot further back were last year’s champions, Tom Law and Michael Cox (Broome Manor), and ex-county captain and former foursomes winner Jez Tomlinson (Marlborough) and ex-England men’s golf captain Colin Edwards (Cumberwell Park), with Kitching and Futcher next.

Wiltshire county captain Ali James and Joe Retford (Cumberwell Park) carded a level-par 72 to move into sixth place, with Cumberwell’s Mark Snape and Rick Smart (Kingsdown) fourth after a 72.

The Draytons improved on their morning round by 10 shots to card a three-under-par 69, with Kitching and Futcher tied alongside them after a 73 and Slade and Cooper also there.

Kitching and Futcher bowed out after the second play-off hole.

On the third play-off hole, Cooper’s approach landed around 10 feet from the hole, but was bettered by the elder Drayton, who landed two feet away. Slade’s birdie putt missed, leaving Guy Drayton to hole out to secure the win.
