SAM Matton missed out on a spot at the Open Championship following a disappointing second round at Western Gailes Golf Club, Glasgow.
The 20-year-old, pictured left, had been in with a chance of qualification following his first round effort of two over, but he shot 76 the second time round, to end on seven over, tied for 40th.
But there was great news for Cumberwell Park man Steve Surry, who finished second on four under par to ensure his path to Turnberry, alongside the likes of Swindon’s former Ryder Cup man David Howell.
Amateur Matton, who is a Broome Manor and Bowood club member, made a good start to his second round, and was at level par for the round after the first five holes.
He then birdied the par five sixth and parred the next two holes, but blotted his copybook before the turn as he double bogeyed the ninth.
Unfortunately Matton was unable to recover, as he bogeyed the 11th and 18th, and also dropped two shots on the 16th.
Elsewhere, Cumberwell Park golfer Craig Bell finished tied for 57th on 10 over par.
Meanwhile, an impressive round of 69 from Wrag Barn pro Martin Sell at Glasgow-Gailes Links was not enough to see him through to Turnberry.
Sell’s second 18 saw him end qualifying on four over par, tied for 38th place.
When he bogeyed the fifth and seventh, it looked like it might be a long day for the Swindon star.
Sell birdied the ninth before that was cancelled out on the very next hole, but he finished superbly on the final straight, birdying four of the last six holes, to end on two under par for the day.
The Open is due to take place at Turnberry on Thursday, July 16, with the cream of world golf due to descend on the picturesque course at Turnberry.
