DAVID Howell has congratulated Steve Surry after the Trowbridge player took the number of Wiltshire participants in next week’s Open Championship to two.

Surry joined Swindon’s two-time Ryder Cup star in the field for Turnberry after coming through final qualifying this week - much to the delight of both Howell and his caddie Nick Mumford, who is a close friend of the Cumberwell Park man.

Howell said: “I saw that Steve got through qualifying. That’s fantastic for Wiltshire and great to see.

“My caddie Nick (Mumford) was really delighted about that because he’s very good friends with Steve.’’ Howell meanwhile was beginning his bid to play himself into some sort of form ahead of next week’s Open Championship today.

The Broome Manor man has returned to shafts he used previously with his irons in a bid to end a run of four successive missed cuts.

Howell, who was due to tee off his bid for the Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond today at 1pm, told the Swindon Advertiser: “I’ve gone back to an old sets of shafts and it feels a bit better.

“I haven’t been hitting the ball and, together with not doing the things I usually do well, I haven’t had much form at all. If I can start hitting well from tee to green then hopefully the results will come.’’ Howell has also given his thumbs-up to the lay-out at the Open venue of Turnberry, following a visit to the venue a couple of weeks ago.
