DAVID Howell produced some vintage form to surge up the leaderboard and make the cut at the Avantha Masters in India.
Starting the day at two over, another weekend off looked likely for the Broome Manor man before he started reeling off birdies at will to card a fine round of 68 to take him to two-under-par for the tournament - two shots clear of the chop in Delhi.
Howell birdied the first hole and those red figures were out in force on the front nine, with further joy at the fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth.
The back nine proved steadier but further birdies came at 14 and the par-five last.
But in customary fashion there were a few shots dropped as well, with hole two proving a problem for the second successive day and fellow par fours the fifth and 12th also costing the 34-year-old shots.
Two of Howell’s countrymen share the lead in India, with Barry Lane’s second 67 in a row leaving him at minus 10 for the event along with John Parry, with first round leader Yin-Shin Chan also on that mark.
European Tour favourites Darren Clarke and Oliver Fisher are just off the pace on minus seven.
BASSET Down made it through to their first final since the opening of the course by winning their semi-final of the Wessex League Winter Foursomes.
An outstanding display saw them defeat the Fosseway Golf Club B team 4-1.
The Wessex League provides the opportunity for nine hole golf courses to play in a competitive league.
The results of the matches were: G Short and S Smith won 5&3; Matt and John Leighton won 5&4; P Sheridan and P Edwards won 3&1; R Everden and P Bond won 1 up; K Pryke and J Brain lost 1 down.
Basset Down now await the result of the second semi-final between Entry Hill Golf Club (Bath) and La Farge Golf Club (Westbury).
BROOME Manor held their Four Nations Cup last Saturday. This was a fourball better ball pairs competition where each hole won by each pair (eight pairs for each country) wins a point for their team. The result was a tie between England and Scotland both on 38 points.
Ireland were third on 37 points and the wooden spoon went to Wales with 28 points.
