Broome Manor Golf Club held its Annual Dinner and Dance last Saturday,the traditional moment where the club captaincy changes hands .
Unfortunately, the Captain’s Farewell Cup event, which should have taken place on the same day, was cancelled due to the recent wet weather.
The outgoing captain, Mick Gregorace, was pleased to present two cheques of £2,000 each for his charities - The British Heart Foundation and MacMillan Nurses.
Roddy Marshall of the British Heart Foundation attended the dinner, along with his wife Pauline, and gratefully accepted the generous donation.
Gregorace thoroughly enjoyed his year as club captain, during which time he raised in excess of £4,000 for his charities, and hands over the reigns of captaincy to Gerry Hall.
The new captains formally began the new season at the ‘Drive In’, which went ahead despite the course being officially closed.
An impressive straight and long drive by the new junior captain, Yoshio Takeuchi, who plays off a handicap of 1, was followed by drives from the new senior captain, Pete Law, the new lady captain, Carol Sear, and finally by Hall.
The new club captain’s charity fundraising got off to a good start as £100 was raised thanks to fundraising intitatives at the traditional event.
Incoming captain Hall spoke of his excitment at taking on the role.
He said: “I am honoured to have become club captain for 2010. I am looking forward to my year with enthusiasm and excitement.
“The qualities I value in golf are integrity, honour, fair play, etiquette, and above all sportsmanship.
“I wish all golfers a great year.”
Hall also announced the club’s charity of choice for the year .
“My chosen charity is Starlight Children’s Charity, through the local Have a Heart Appeal,” he said.
“Whilst on July 24 Broome Manor is honoured to be hosting a ‘Help the Heroes’ day. More information will be published nearer the date.”
