Loughrey set for Peru outing

WRAG Barn’s Ben Loughrey will team up with Lincolnshire’s Adam Keogh next month, in a bid to extend England’s solid record in the Peruvian Amateur Championship at Lima Golf Club.

Loughrey, 21 is a former Wiltshire junior champion, who has been a key member of the Wiltshire team in the past three English County Championship finals.

In 2009, he won the South West Colts Championship, the North of England Youth’s Championship and finished runner-up in the South West Stroke Play Championship.

This year, Loughrey was a member of the England team which finished runners-up in the Costa Ballena Quadrangular Tournament in Spain. He also qualified for the match play stages of the recent Spanish Amateur Championship but was beaten in the first round.

Keogh, 21, reached the semi-finals of the English Amateur at Woodhall Spa in 2008 when still a teenager and represented the English Golf Union (EGU) in the Chiberta Grand Prix last year. Also in 2009, he won the Lee Westwood Trophy at Rotherham with a closing 69.

English players have previously enjoyed success in the event. In 2005 the English Golf Union sent players to Lima, and Neil Chaudhuri from Leicestershire shared the individual title with Mario Maya of Venezuela after the pair finished tied, then played three holes of a sudden death playoff, only to run out of daylight.

In 2006, James Morrison from Surrey and Yorkshire’s John Parry finished second in the team event while Morrison was runner-up in the individual prize.

Three years ago, Jamie Abbott and James Smith finished fourth in the team competition whilst last year, Adam Best from Cleveland finished tied fourth in the individual when representing an English student team.

The Peruvian Amateur is 72 holes of stroke play. Both players’ scores to count over all four rounds for the team event.

The Winners Plate was played at Broome Manor Golf Club on Saturday, March 13.

Scoring was generally high as the event was played off the white tees to soft fairways, leaving little roll on the ball.

The event was open to all players who won a competition during the previous 12 months.

The winner was junior James Wiltshire, who is also the most improved player in the club statistically.

His handicap is now 12 having started the season last April on the maximum of 28. James shot a gross 79 to score a net 67 off his 12 handicap.

Second place went to Tony White (72-03 =69) and Miles Mackman (67+2=69) who shot the best gross of 67, came third.

Congratulations go to Mark Bodman, who during his round of nett 73 playing off 12, scooped the two’s pool as the only player to score a two on the day.
