Walters edges stableford

CIRENCESTER Seniors turned out in force to compete in the monthly stableford in blustery conditions.

The overall scores were on the low side, with only seven of the 75 competitors bettering their handicap.

In Division One, Dave Walters and John Morris both scored 38 points, Walters taking top spot on countback. He putted well throughout, making birdies on two of the par fives and another on the short par four sixth. John Pugh played the best back nine of anyone and in returning 36 points, captured third from John Hartley and John King on 35.

John Canty achieved back-to-back success when he won Division Two with 38 points, following his victory in the November stableford.

Canty did not have it all his own way, having to rely on the countback to give him victory over Sam Shrouder, who finished on 38 points.

The effective clincher was Canty's second shot on the 16th hole, which finished right next to the hole.

Mike Bond scored an excellent 21 points on the front nine and held things together after the turn to finish third with 38 points, one ahead of Ian Hunter and Peter Knight.

Five players scored twos, those being Jack Bastow and Neil Grant on the second, Dave Findlay and Graham Morgan on the 11th and Jim Turner on the 13th.
