DAVID Howell has opted to stay off the golf course for the coming weeks as he rests up following a recent illness.

The Broome Manor pro had been scheduled to play at the Lyoness Open in Atzenbrugg, Austria this week but chose instead to stay in England as he recovers from a chest infection that struck while he was working on the BBC’s coverage of the Open at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s last weekend.

Howell, who has been on an upturn of form with club in hand of late, told the Advertiser that time off was necessary at this juncture.

“I’ve pulled out this week because I was a bit ill recently,” he said.

“I had a bit of a bad throat and chest infection when I was up in Scotland at the Open doing media work and thought it best to give myself a bit of a rest.

“I’m having a bit of a break for a month or so to recharge the batteries and hopefully come out firing again for the rest of the season.”
