Can luck of Irish help Howell?
DAVID Howell will be hoping to profit from the luck of the Irish when he tees up in Shanghai this morning for the opening round of the BMW Asian Open.
The Swindon ace will partner last week's Volvo China Open winner Damien McGrane over the first two days, and will look to draw some inspiration from the Irishman's stunning nine-shot success.
Howell, pictured right, finished tied 29th in Beijing after a dismal final round of 79, but the man from Broome Manor is determined to keep his spirits high.
Having already scooped two pieces of BMW silverware in his career to date, the 32-year-old admits he would dearly love to make it a hat-trick of titles in Shanghai.
"I haven't yet played in this tournament but I'm looking forward to it as I always have a good feeling about BMW events, having won two," Howell told his website.
"So even though I drive a Jaguar S Type R, another piece of BMW silverware would not go amiss from the mantelpiece.
"The great thing about being a pro golfer is that there's always next week - just ask Damien McGrane. Damien has been making steady progress over the last few years and it was great to see him finally get over the winning line."
Shanghai holds some happy memories for Howell.
Three years ago he beat world number one Tiger Woods down the stretch to win the HSBC Champions tournament there, earning him the nickname "Cool Dude."
The Asian Open will be staged at the Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club for the fifth successive year, as the Tour returns to the popular 7,300-yard par 72 course.
Previous winners of the event include Ernie Else, Padraig Harrington and Miguel Angel Jimenez, but Howell knows he still has much work to do to join such illustrious company at the winner's table.
He said: "I can only assume that without the eagle eye of Jamie Gough giving me the confidence to commit to the changes we're trying to make, my swing sank back into some old habits last week.
"But with my new set-up position staying good I was left between the devil and the deep blue sea, having no feel for the shots at all.
"Now is the time to stay with the process and be patient. Change is always difficult, especially when you are competing, so this week will be another test of character."
India's top golfer Jeev Milkha Singh makes up Howell's three-ball, which was due out at 7.10am (Shanhai time) this morning from the 10th tee.
