Howell on the back foot in Ireland

DAVID Howell is already playing catch up to his rivals at the Irish Open after a three over par opening round of 75 at Adare Manor today.

The Swindon star trails early clubhouse leaders Richard Green and Jeev Milkha Singh by nine shots after both carded impressive rounds of 66 on a sun-drenched morning in County Limerick.

Howell's morning began brightly enough too, and he followed a solid par at the 10th (his opening hole) with a birdie two on the 11th.

Howell gave that shot back with a bogey on 13, before three consecutive pars helped steady the ship.

A bogey-birdie finish ensured Howell reached the turn exactly where he had started, on level par.

But the wheels came off for the man from Broome Manor on his inward nine, a solitary birdie was sandwiched between four bogeys.

The six to close at the par five ninth hole will have done nothing for Howell's fragile confidence, and he will have to repair the damage with a better round on Friday.

See tomorrow's Swindon Advertiser for full story and reaction and follow Howell's progress online throughout the week.
