GOLF: Trute and Pickles usher in new Marlborough era
THE Marlborough club have a new general manager, writes Ernie Newell.
Les Trute, a member since 1987, was appointed last week and assumed his duties at the 120-year-old club on Monday.
He succeeds Welshman Phillip Jones, who quit the job in January after only eight months.
Trute, 54, was previously a publican in Ross-on-Wye for five years.
Before that he spent 23 years toiling for Allied Dunbar in Swindon.
He is married with two children and lives in Swindon. He plays off a handicap of 11.
Marlborough's new club captain, retired civil engineer Richard Pickles, drives himself into office at 12.45pm tomorrow.
Pickles, 62, who succeeds Frank Nicholls, has been a member of the club since 1999, has a handicap of 16 and lives in Marlborough.
He was seniors' captain at the club in 2006.
David Tyler won Marlborough's Bank Holiday flag' competition.
The 12-handicapper knocked round in 83 for a nett 71 and went on to plant his flag on the 19th fairway.
Second man Mark Sadler (5) also finished on the 19th fairway after a round of nett 71.
The women's flag' competition was won by Wiltshire vice-captain Karen Gosling (6).
She planted her flag just short of the 18th green and went on to record a nett 75.
Colin Farr, playing off 13 handicap, won Broome Manor's March medal with a fine round of eight-below-par nett 63.
Another 13-handicapper, Richard Palmer, was second with 65. John Glass (15) and vice-captain Mick Gregorace (4) came next with 66.
Broome Manor seniors' March medal was won by club secretary Colin Beresford with nett 66.
The 17-handicapper finished two shots ahead of Mike Jones (16), with Pete Thomas (15) third with 69.
Matt Day and Tim Smith won the 14th of Carswell's 16-round winter league with 38 stableford points.
Andy Mack, who was playing on his own, was a good second, just one point behind on 37, and Al Biggins and Andy Verrent were third with 35.
