GOLF: Turland joint second in bid for Scottish title
WILTSHIRE'S Hannah Turland, the England Girls' Under 13's champion who won the recent girls' section of the Faldo Junior Series at Saunton, further emphasised her growing stature by finishing joint second in the Scottish Girls' under 16 championship at Craigielaw, writes Ernie Newell.
The Tidworth starlet returned a 36-hole score of 146, the same as England's Heidi Baek and Amy Boulden, of Wales, and just one more than winner Laura Sedda, of Italy.
Turland, who is 14 in June and plays off a handicap of two, was one shot off the lead at halfway after a round of one-under par 70 and maintained her position with a second round of 76.
Turland may have missed out on the individual title, but the twice South West Under 15 champion played a leading role in England's second successive victory in the three-girl team event for the Nations Cup, which was played in conjunction with the championship at the East Lothian club.
England's designated trio of Turland, England Under 15's champion Baek (Felixstowe Ferry), and Alex Peters, the Midland women's champion from Nottingham, who was ninth in the individual championship with 150, beat Italy by two strokes. Ireland were third and Wales fourth.
Two other members of England's seven-strong squad made the top 10 in the individual championship, Hayley Davis (Ferndown) finishing sixth with 148 and Jessica Bradley (Tiverton) tenth with 151.
Claire Lilley, the England women's national training manager, said: "This is a very young and promising squad who are bright prospects for the future.
They've had some really good experience and returned some very consistent scoring. What they have learned here will stand them in good stead for the season."
WILTSHIRE women had an unsuccessful start to the season, suffering a 7-5 defeat at the hands of High Post men in their annual friendly at the Great Durnford club.
The men won the morning foursomes 31/2-1/2, but to their credit Bev Dolman's women struck back in the afternoon to take the singles 41/2-31/2.
Jayne Long, from Tidworth, was undefeated with two halves.
She teamed up with club-mate Di Gritt to score their side's sole half-point in the foursomes against Martin Glossop and Matt Phoenix-Hobbs and halved her single against Paul Lambert.
Twelve-year-old Kyra Horlock, from Hamptworth, was one of the county's four winners in the singles, showing her promise with a four and two victory over Kevin Arthur.
The women's other three winners were four-times county champion Sue Sutton (Ogbourne Downs), Twice champion Gill Loughrey (Wrag Barn) and captain-elect Karen Gosling (Marlborough).
"Although we lost the foursomes by three, it was a close match and I was pleased with the way we fought back to win the singles," said skipper Dolman, from Ogbourne Downs. The match was a good warm-up for next month's County Week at Dudsbury."
Dolman, who is in the last of her two years as captain, will announce her squad for the next six-county round robin tournament at the Dorset club from May 12-16 after this weekend's Wiltshire Women's Championship at Hamptworth.
