Gritt holes in one at Stoneham

GOLF ROUND-UP

After more than 25 years of trying, former Wiltshire women's captain Di Gritt, from Tidworth, has had the satisfaction of scoring a hole in one.

She performed the feat with an 8-iron at the short 16th at Stoneham in losing by one hole to Sue Mayman (Bedale) in the first round of the English Seniors' Championship.

  • BROOME Manor's Miles Mackman finished fourth in the Hampshire Salver, which comprises the combined scores in the Selborne Salver at Blackmoor and Hampshire Hog at North Hants, writes Ernie Newell.

The Lagonda champion and England A Squad player shot 137 in the Selborne and 142 in the Hog for a four-round total of 279, four behind winner Stiggy Hodgson (Sunningdale).

Wrag Barn's Ben Loughrey was joint seventh in the Hampshire Salver with 282 (141 in both the Selborne and Hog), while Sam Matton, the Wiltshire champion and England Under 21 Squad player from Bowood, finished down the field with 308.

  • Cumberwell Park's Steve Surry was Wiltshire's leading professional in the Swindon-based Jamega Tour's opening event at Forest Hills (Coleford) with a 36-hole score of 143, one over par and six behind winner Lloyd Kennedy.

  • David Thomas, playing off 19 handicap, won Broome Manor's KC's Members' Club Trophy with a round of eight under par nett 63.

Albert Frederick (8) was second with 67 and Steve Ballard (3) third with 68. Ballard's par 71 was the day's best gross.

The club prize for those with handicaps 20-28 was won by Colin Mills (20) with nett 76.

  • The McMillan Nurses' Medal at North Wilts was won by J Quinney (17) with seven under par nett 64.

A McFadzean (26) was second with 66 and D Bradley (11) third with 68. D Vallis had the best gross of 75.

  • At Ogbourne Downs, Darren Hayden recorded the best nett of four under par 67 in the April Sunday medal.

It gave the 11-handicapper a four-stroke victory in the top division over Paul Stepp (9).

Martin Cox (17) won division two on countback from Colin Ducker (20) and Harry Birch (24), all three carding nett 70. Dave Myler had the best gross of 77.
