GOLF: North Wilts pair set for national pro-am
MIKE Prince will partner North Wilts professional Graham Laing in next week's regional qualifier for the PGA National Pro-Am Championship at Saunton, writes ERNIE NEWELL.
Prince also played with Laing in the championship last season when it was the Lombard Pro-Am.
The 17-handicapper earned the right to play with five-time Hills Wiltshire professional champion Laing for the second successive year by winning the Devizes club's qualifier on countback after a tie on one over par nett 72 in wet and windy conditions with Bob Burley (6) and Andy Dodd (11).
Two other tournaments at North Wilts also produced nailbiting finales.
Eight-handicap Peter Tomlinson won the Tilley & Culverwell Cup for low handicappers on countback from Jake Vallis (12), both scoring nett 69. Brian Strang (3) was third with 72.
Yet another card play-off was needed to decide the Wansdyke Cup for high-handicappers.
Both Colin Bowerman (17) and Joss Tomlinson (25) returned nett 73, the issue being settled by Bowerman's better back nine. Jamie Cowley (18) was third with 75.
