GOLF: Old Boys hand out a 12-3 thrashing
WILTSHIRE Old Boys gained revenge for their 9-6 defeat at the hands of the Wiltshire County Team in last year's inaugural match for the Deacon Cup at Broome Manor with a resounding and highly satisfying 12-3 victory over a youthful county team at Cumberwell Park, writes Ernie Newell.
The Old Boys, led by former county captain Jeremy Tomlinson and including six professionals, laid the foundations for their success with a 5-0 whitewash in the foursomes and then took the singles 7-3.
Tomlinson and Marlborough professional Simon Amor started the Old Boys' rout in the foursomes by defeating Sam Elkins (South Wilts) and Jason Beint (Broome Manor) by two and one.
Cumberwell Park professionals Steve Surry and Craig Bell beat Wiltshire captain Alistair James (Cumberwell Park) and Ben Loughrey (Wrag Barn) by the same score.
Ken Clark (High Post) and Richard White (Fleet) and Broome Manor professional Steve Robertson and Alan Mutch (South Wilts) had one-hole victories over the Marlborough pair of Jack Hiscock and David Bauer and Cumberwell Park's Ashley Monaghan and Paul Matthews respectively.
Wrag Barn professional Martin Sell and Bristol pro Nick Korynevsky completed the Old Boys' clean sweep of the foursomes with a three and two win over the Cumberwell Park partnership of Matt Swales and Charlie James.
Tomlinson put the Old Boys six ahead by defeating Alistair James, a plus-two player and, at 25, Wiltshire's youngest ever captain, in a low-scoring top singles by one hole.
Surry, the 2000 Wiltshire amateur champion, increased the Old Boys' lead to seven with a two and one victory over Swales.
Loughrey cut the County Team's deficit to six with a two and one win over 2007 Jamega Tour order of merit winner Sell, but Korynevsky settled the County Team's fate by trouncing Elkins by seven and six.

Singles: Tomlinson beat A James 1 up; Surry beat Swales 2/1; Sell lost to Loughrey 2/1; Korynevsky beat Elkins 7/6; Bell beat Jack Hiscock 2 up; Clark beat Beint 2/1; Mutch lost to C James 1 down; White beat Monaghan 2/1; Robertson lost to Bauer 1 down; Amor beat Matthews 1 up.
The match was established last year as an early-season warm-up for the county team.
Wiltshire went on to win the South Western Counties Championship for the first time during Wrag Barn's Jonathan James' last year as captain, but had to take the wooden spoon in the Channel League.
Wiltshire, who felled Glamorgan 91/2 to 51/2 in the first of this term's six league matches at Cumberwell Park last month, play Cornwall at Bowood tomorrow.
Alistair James' 10-strong team includes six of the side beaten by the Old Boys. They are Sam Elkins, Jack Hiscock, Charlie James, Ben Loughrey, Matt Swales and skipper James himself.
The other four members of the team are England A Squad player Miles Mackman (Broome Manor), England Under 21s squad player Sam Matton (Bowood), Richard Scarrott (Wrag Barn) and Mike White (West Wilts).
