WOOTTON Bassett Ladies overcame relegation strugglers Blockley 5-3 in the West Womens North Divison.

Despite their lowly league position it was Blockley who made the early running against their midtable opponents, but the Bassett defence held strong.

The away side were struggling to gain control of the match when a speculative high ball to Ceri Burgess left her with a lengthy sprint and the goalkeeper to beat. Burgess cooly took the opportunity against the run of play to put Bassett 1-0 ahead.

The goal had a settling effect on Bassett, who stepped up their pressure with a short corner. Katy Cox hammered home to double Bassett's lead as the Blockley keeper and defence were unable to deal with Helen Wright’s initial effort.

Wright then dispatched another short corner and player of the match Emma Collison added a fourth in open play for a 4-0 lead at the half.

Blockley caught the away side short early in the second half, overloading the semi-circle to score a quick goal.

Bassett continued to dominate, with the goal seeming like a blip until an own goal halved the deficit, making it 4-2.

A third Blockley goal from a short corner gave the hosts brief belief of an unlikely comeback.

However, Bassett responded with significant pressure, eventually forcing a fifth goal from captain Emma Langdon to finish the contest.
