Swindon suffered a crushing last-second 3-2 defeat at the hands of Newent.

The first half saw display some impressive hockey from the hosts and they took the lead when Steve Dixon finished a flowing move after the keeper initially stopped the first effort.

Attacking play from Luke Cejer, Parsons and Cheney all ended in close efforts on goal but the score remained 1-0 at the interval.

The intensity did not drop in the second half and some fantastic work from skipper Cejer enabled Lewis Dyer to find space in the circle, calmly slipping the ball under the advancing keeper.

Swindon then took their foot off the gas, and allowed Newent back in.

A smart deflection from open play, followed by another deflected short corner, saw Newent draw level with 10 minutes left of the clock.

Swindon had a number of penalty corners late on but didn't make the most of them and Newent grabbed the winner at the death.

Cejer said: “We will learn from our mistakes. It is clear for everyone at the game that there was only one team in the match, but somehow we have failed to retain the advantage.”

Swindon Ladies firsts earned back-to-back league wins when they defeated Cheltenham seconds 1-0.

After eight minutes, the only goal of the game was scored by Swindon captain Vicki Stokes, from a well-worked short corner.

Although Cheltenham rallied and the game was more even for the remaining minutes of the first half, the visitors retained their advantage at the interval.

The second half was dominated by Swindon and much of the game was played in the Cheltenham half.

The ladies’ second team eased to a 6-1 victory over Wootton Bassett.

Swindon were 4-0 up by half-time and the win, which saw goals from Nicola Wylie, Sue Roberts (2), Angela Cooke, Heather Knight and Ella Caldwell, help the team climb to second in the Wessex One division.
