SWINDON teenager Nat O’Dwyer has a new national medal to add to his trophy cabinet after helping his Team Bath Buccaneers U14 side to fourth place at the national finals of England Hockey’s Boys U14 Championship last weekend.

Lydiard Park Academy pupil O’Dwyer, 14, was part of the first-ever Team Bath side to reach the national finals, which were held at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre – the Olympic venue for London 2012.

Eight teams, split into two groups of four, were in the hunt to be crowned kings of the country and, after progressing through local and regional stages throughout the season, O’Dwyer’s team finished second in Pool B.

They were beaten 2-0 by eventual runners-up Surbiton, drew 1-1 with Beeston thanks to Will Prentice’s equaliser, and then beat Bishop’s Stortford 2-0, John Holdoway and Tom Henly scoring.

Those results sealed a second-placed finish in the pool and a third/fourth-place play-off against Kent outfit Marden Russets but the Swindon youngster’s side suffered a 3-0 defeat.

At the start of the month, O’Dwyer helped Team Bath beat Cheltenham 4-3 in the final of the Avon Junior Hockey League U14 Boys division.
