Swindon’s men’s team turned in a faultless performance to thrash Wiltshire rivals West Wilts 5-1, helped in no small part by a hat-trick from Tom Lentschner.

Swindon dominated possession early on but failed to create any meaningful chances. However, this was put to bed when Tom Goldsmith fired the ball into Henry Cheney to give them a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time.

A quick start to the second half was crucial and Luke Cejer fed Lentschner, who drove to the line and fired a reverse hit across to allow Ted Slater to net his first goal for the club.

Unfortunately, Swindon were pegged back when a mix-up between Matt Kenyon and Adam Carr saw Wilts earn a short corner, which they converted at the back post.

Swindon did not panic and Slater got his second of the game after good work from Matt Kenyon before Lentschner added two more late on to complete his hat-trick and round off the scoring.

Meanwhile, Swindon Ladies’ turned in a gutsy performance to earn a 1-1 draw in their West Premier League game at Plymouth Marjons.

With play mainly taking place in the Swindon half, resolute defence from Mary Goldsmith and Claire Sage, backed by a strong display from keeper Sarah Anstey, kept the score goalless at half-time.

With only two minutes of the second half played, a strong run from a Plymouth forward was finished with a reverse stick shot into the net.

The goal triggered a period of dominance for Swindon as Gemma Scrase and Linda Brouwers carved open the defence to create numerous opportunities.

When one attack was upgraded to a penalty corner, it was sweetly struck by teenager Chloe Lewis and the rebound was tucked home by Gemma Scrase.

In a frenetic final 10 minutes, Plymouth pressed but Swindon stood resolute to earn their point.

  • ROYAL Wootton Bassett suffered a last-gasp 3-2 defeat to Westbury and Union Bankers in Central One of the GoCrea8 League.

The club, who wore armbands in memory of former clubmate Stephanie Wheeler, who passed away the previous weekend, went into the game looking for their first win of the league campaign.

However, it was Westbury who opened the scoring when they deflected the ball into the net following a short corner routine in the eighth minute.

Martyn Chivers levelled the scored for the hosts after he tucked away Craig McLauchlin’s cross.

But parity was short-lived as Westbury scored from another short-corner routine.

After four consecutive short corners after the break, Bassett’s Jakeen Mical Lee pounced on a loose ball to play in man-of-the-match Christopher Lambert to make it 2-2.

However, with time running out, Westbury grabbed their decisive third goal from another short corner.
