SWINDON dug deep in their latest West Clubs League Premier Division One match against Taunton Vale, scoring in the last minute to gain a valuable draw.

The visitors started stronger than a sluggish home side, who failed to build any constructive play in the first 15 minutes.

The only clear first-half chance fell to teenager Chloe Lewis but her penalty corner was saved.

With Taunton pressing hard, their extra pace and aggression led to a deserved first goal.

When the Taunton attack burst into the circle, Swindon were overloaded, allowing a forward to score from close range.

The second half started disastrously for Swindon when after four minutes, Taunton extended their lead as a well-worked move was expertly finished.

After chasing the game for 50 minutes, Swindon eventually found their playing rhythm and passing accuracy.

Strong attacking play from Megan Poole and Emily Arrell forced the Taunton defence to concede a penalty corner, from which, a powerful strike from Chloe Lewis was deflected into the net by a defender.

As the game entered the last two minutes, Taunton’s defence was being split apart on a regular basis.

Wave after wave of Swindon attacks led to a deserved second goal as influential midfielder Linda Brouwers pressed into the circle and the ball was scrambled into the net by Gemma Scrase.

Scrase said: “We are learning to dig out results. We could have easily rolled over, but the team showed real heart to scrap for a result.’’
