SWINDON gave their slim hopes of promotion in Conference North a shot in the arm when they defeated local rivals Chippenham 3-2 at Isambard School.

The hosts made a confident start and did enough in the opening half to secure the win, which all but sealed Chippenham’s relegation in the process.

Swindon started brightly but a number of superb saves by the Chippenham keeper kept the score goalless.

The rapid pace of Swindon’s play was causing a lot of problem and after some quick thinking from Lewis Dyer, he bounded into the D and slotted into the net to give the home side the lead.

Swindon quickly doubled their advantage after Ted Slater was sent through and he calmly placed the ball past the on-rushing keeper.

The hosts made it 3-0 before half-time when a firm strike from veteran midfielder Chris Parsons was deflected into the net by top goalscorer Tom Goldsmith.

The second period started much the same way as the first, with a number of chances being created by the Swindon forwards, although those opportunities went begging.

However, the hosts then lifted their foot off the gas and Chippenham took advantage to score two quick goals, including one from an excellent team move.

But Swindon were just able to hold on for the win and two more wins, coupled with defeats for the sides above them, could see them promoted.

Swindon’s ladies secured a point against Isca 2nd in Premier One to get back on track after two heavy defeats.

The hosts started well against the young, fit university side, however, they were unable to create an abundance of chances.

Isca then gained a foothold in the match through a number of short corners, which were swatted away by Claire Tyas’ superb tackling and clearing, with Sarah Anstey working well in a sweeping capacity.

However, Isca were first to score from open play as quick passing gave one of their players a free shot from the penalty spot, which she struck at pace to leave Anstey with no chance of stopping it.

During the interval, coach Kerry Baker was positive about the team’s performance but insisted they needed be tighter on their opponents.

This took heed and Swindon were aggressive from the off, epitomised by an inspiring aerial duel involving Chloe Lewis.

Hard work across the pitch earned Swindon a deserved short corner, which was converted by Gemma Scrase for a scrappy but important goal.

Swindon’s Emily Arrell and Chloe Lewis stretched Isca’s defence and tested the keeper on a number of occasions as they hunted a winning goal and they were unlucky not to covert despite having little support from a tired midfield.
