BECKHAMPTON trainer Roger Charlton is weighing up several Group One options for Thistle Bird after she opened her account at the highest level at the weekend.

The six-year-old mare had come close a few times to breaking her Group One duck, most notably in the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last year, and that race is once again a possibility.

The Prix Jean Romanet in France and also the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington Park in America are also in the offing.

Writing on his website, www.rogercharlton.com, the Beckhampton handler said: “It was one of those truly magical weekends with Thistle Bird winning the Pretty Polly Group One at the Curragh on Sunday.

“She has been so tough and consistent all her life, just improving and improving and at the age of six to have produced her best performance is very rewarding.

“She was given a great ride by George Baker, who like James Doyle when he won on Al Kazeem last year, had never ridden over the (round) course before.

“She was winning her sixth black type race out of a total of eight races and twenty starts.

“It was marvellously game of Lady Rothschild to allow me to keep her in training as a six-year-old and we now have the option of returning to Goodwood for the fifth time to run in the Nassau Stakes Group One on August 2, the Romanet Group One (for four-year-old and up mares at Deauville) on August 24 or travel to Arlington for the Beverly D Group One on August 16.

“The race is worth in total $750,000 and is over nine and half furlongs on turf for mares. The race was won last year by Dank where she beat Gifted Girl.

“The Curragh has been good to me since I started training having won 11 stakes races there, including two Group Ones, a Group Two and five Group Threes.”
