Summary

  • Peterborough 4-3 Swindon (OT)
  • Wildcats fail in bid for first four-point weekend
  • REPORTING BY NED PAYNE

8:41pm

8:11pm

There's going to be some serious frustration in the Wildcats locker room right now. Can't help feeling this clock debate will run for a while.

8:07pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 4, Wildcats 3, 60.48)

That is so cruel on Swindon. Once again defeated in overtime. Peterborough have a two-on-one and Norton tucks into the roof of the net.

8:03pm

Here we go with overtime.

8:03pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 3, Wildcats 3, 59.59)

James Ferrara flicked back for Sladok, who directed home at the near post. But surely the clock was on zero? Massive controversy here.

8:00pm

Oh my goodness me. Peterborough think they have scored through Sladok. But have they? The Cats camp are convinced the clock had run down to zero.

7:59pm

Goalie pulled.

7:59pm

There's 28 seconds left.

7:58pm

Time out. There's just over a minute left.

7:57pm

Swindlehurst gets two minutes for delay of game. Nervous times, these.

7:56pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 2, Wildcats 3, 57.13)

With Melichar off the ice, the puck is delivered in the air in front of the net by James Hutchinson, and Tom Carlon bats it down into the left corner of the net.

7:53pm

Melichar gets two minutes for holding.

7:52pm

Brilliant battling defence by Swindon. Top-drawer.

7:48pm

Six and a half minutes remain.

7:47pm

Kapicka takes a knock now and he comes off. Looked like a leg or ankle problem.

7:45pm

Watt looks like he's taken a whack on the hand or wrist. He'll carry on though, of course.

7:44pm

Skinns flicks the loose puck away in front of his net. All about composure now.

7:40pm

Phantoms have generally cranked up the pressure in this period. You've got to give credit to the Swindon D, though, Skinns been well-protected tonight.

7:39pm

Penalty killed.

7:36pm

Two minutes for Bullas.

7:33pm

Comparatively quiet start to the third period. Swindon will be quite happy with that.

7:32pm

Massive check by Sladok on Nell. Wow. That wouldn't have been out of place in the WWE.

7:30pm

More handbags. Just nonsense really.

7:28pm

The puck is fired through a crowd of players and deflects, but Skinns does very well to adjust and parry it to safety.

7:26pm

Period three is underway. Swindon are just 20 minutes away from their first four-point weekend of the season.

7:23pm

Here come the teams.

7:20pm

Shots on goal for period two: Peterborough 17, Wildcats 11. Running total: Peterborough 30, Wildcats 23.

7:06pm

End of period two and Wildcats are 3-1 up. There's some sort of handbags at the buzzer. Nothing major but the temperature is rising in this game.

7:05pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 1, Wildcats 3, 39.35)

James Ferrara immediately seizes on the powerplay opportunity to direct home Peterborough's first of the night.

7:03pm

Fojtik gets two minutes for hooking and it was very blatant.

7:00pm

Just over a minute of period two left.

6:56pm

The next goal is massive.

6:55pm

Penalty killed by the home side.

6:54pm

Melichar of all people tries his luck. Denied by King with the glove.

6:53pm

Phantoms have one man back now.

6:53pm

Fojtik is wiped out by Jeff Glowa when through on goal. Glowa gets two minutes for slashing and Cats have a five-on-three.

6:51pm

Now Weldon gets two minutes for holding.

6:51pm

Just to clarify, both Swindlehurst and Floyd Taylor earlier served 2+2s for roughing.

6:49pm

6:48pm

Penalty killed.

6:46pm

Two minutes for Joe Baird for interference. Swindlehurst had been sitting in the box but is now back out on the ice.

6:44pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 0, Wildcats 3, 29.06)

Loris Taylor feeds Watt and with a bit of clever stick work he finishes with a flourish. Very much the visitors' game to lose now.

6:37pm

Strange sequence of events. Watt is pushed to the deck by Will Weldon when play appeared to have stopped. Handbags between Swindlehurst and Norton follow. After all that, it's Chris Jones that gets a 2+10 for checking from behind.

6:35pm

Huge scramble around the Wildcats goal. Skinns stands firm.

6:35pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 0, Wildcats 2, 24.38)

Swindon are defending their left side when all of a sudden Swindlehurst clears and Kapicka is completely free heading towards the net. He beats King with ease and the visitors are two goals to the good. Sam Bullas also got an assist.

6:31pm

6:31pm

Mazy dribble from Hoog is oh-so-nearly finished by Nell. King elbowed Nell's shot away from danger.

6:29pm

Decent chance at the moment. Still tight, though.

6:26pm

Jozef Sladok shoots low through a crowd of players, but the screened Skinns blocks.

6:25pm

And we're off.

6:23pm

The teams are back out.

6:19pm

Shots on goal for the first period: Peterborough 13, Wildcats 12.

6:09pm

ADVER SPORTS WRITER NED PAYNE

A goal of great quality separates the sides, but Wldcats need to be wary as heir hosts improved towards the end of the first period. Fojtik certainly made his presence felt. Not sure he'll be having much effect on the game off the ice, though.

6:08pm

End of period one.

6:07pm

Nell denied by King and on the rebound he can't quite get enough stick to the puck. That was very nearly 2-0 and would have set Swindon up for period two quite nicely.

6:06pm

Ziedins is in the net, but the puck isn't. The Phantoms are inching closer.

6:05pm

Skinns pads away a low effort from Lewis Hook.

6:00pm

Penalty killed.

6:00pm

Skinns makes a great low save from which James Ferrara somehow pokes over from about two yards out. Might even have clipped the bar.

5:58pm

There's a 2+10 for Fojtik who has been ordered off the ice for checking from behind. Think it was Norton who he nailed.

5:57pm

Joe Baird squashes Jamie Line into the side wall. Bang.

5:56pm

Super, flowing game of hockey this.

5:53pm

Nicky Watt gets his first chance to test Damien King, but he is denied.

5:52pm

Norton shoots, Skinns blocks comfortably.

5:46pm

Maris Ziedins fires off-target for the hosts.

5:45pm

It's a two-on-one breakout but Nell cannot convert Hoog's pass. Cracking start for the visitors, though.

5:43pm

Shot from Tom Norton on the angle nearly deflects into the net. Netminder Dean Skinns breathes a sigh of relief.

5:41pm

Hoog on the prowl again. Cats want more!

5:40pm

GOAL! (Peterborough 0, Wildcats 1, 0.49)

What a start and what a wonderful goal that was. Aaron Nell seemed to get the puck stuck under him but controlled it brilliantly with his skate and sent a diagonal pass to Jonas Hoog, who finished clinically from close range. Jan Melichar also got an assist.

5:36pm

Period one is go.

5:36pm

A minute's silence for those who died for their country is immaculately observed. We've just had the national anthem, now it's face-off time.

5:32pm

5:31pm

On come the lights and the players are introduced.

5:29pm

Here come the players (still in darkness).

5:25pm

We've been plunged into darkness here at Planet Ice. That can only mean one thing - we're a matter of minutes away from face-off.

5:23pm

I'll bet you've got a lovely Guinness in front of you.

5:17pm

My first sighting of new Wildcats D-man Tomas Fojtik tonight. I can confirm that he is absolutely massive, although only just bigger than Paul Swindlehurst. You'd want him on your side in a fight, that's for sure.

5:12pm

According to tonight's programme, Wildcats are 'not one of the more feared EPL teams'. Motivation much?

5:08pm

That is dedication. Well done, sir.

5:07pm

No Shane Moore or Matias Perkkio tonight of course, both injured. Jamie Hayes is also not icing.

5:06pm

I've just seen Stevie Whitfield's Movember effort and I have to take my hat off to the lad. Excellent work.

WILDCATS HEAD COACH RYAN ALDRIDGE ON THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES

“We are going back to basics and we have to come together as a group and we need to get people fit.

“This weekend is the biggest weekend of the season for us, and we need to perform because if we don’t then the panic button might get hit.

“We have to re-group, and a few people will get some things pointed out to them this week they may not like, but that is hockey and that is the way it goes.

“We may be playing two sides down there, but the league is so tight right now you really can’t take any game for granted, and we need to be at our best for sure.

“Dean Skinns has been superb for us recently and put in some great performances.

“He had a tough weekend last week because he got hit hard twice on the Saturday and then took one in the head on Sunday, so to still perform the way he did was outstanding.

“He needs more protection, though, because we are letting them in front of the net far too many times, and that is not acceptable.”

4:51pm

Speaking of which, both sides are now out on the ice and warming up.

4:51pm

The last time Swindon travelled to Peterborough a travel mishap meant one of the minibuses arrived late, resulting in a delay of 15 minutes on the original face-off time. Wildcats were nearly two hours early today, so they have not been lacking in preparation on this occasion.

4:43pm

Welcome to Planet Ice Peterborough where in around 45 minutes Swindon will begin their quest for their first four-point weekend of the season. Stay here for all the up-to-the-minute details. It certainly promises to be an interesting one.
