DESPITE his team’s impressive start to the season, Swindon Wildcats forward Aaron Nell reckons that the Link Centre men have only scratched the surface of their potential thus far.

The Wildcats have won three of their opening four matches, including a first-ever win at the Manchester Phoenix and a 4-2 comeback victory at the Guildford Flames last weekend.

On a personal level, Nell has found the net in every match of the new campaign but the Swindon goal-getter thinks that there is plenty more to come from his team.

“If we’d got two points out of six to start with, I think we would have been content, so to have four is already is a bonus,” said Nell.

“We’ve started really well but I think that I’ve struggled a little bit so far to be honest.

“Playing with Tomasz (Malasinski) is new, so we’re still getting used to playing with each other but I think we have come on a bit in the last month.

“If you’re struggling and the team still does well, you’re relieved instead of happy. I think the whole team has done well so far but I think that there’s more to come from us.

“If we can carry on building on what we’ve done so far, we can go on to do well.”

The Wildcats go looking to notch up a third successive victory on the road when they make the trip to the Sheffield Steeldogs this weekend and Nell thinks that Swindon’s homesickness is now a thing of the past.

He said: “We used to always struggle away from home but I think that changed nine or ten months ago.

“At home, you want to be playing attacking hockey but in away games, we sit back, try and make it a boring game, and then try to take our chances.

“Winning in Manchester was great because that was a really tough rink to go to and any time you can win at Guildford is great – we were disappointed to lose to them at home on Saturday.

“Sheffield will be tough because they always come at you but it’s going to be up to us to match their work-rate.”
