WILDCATS netminder Stevie Lyle is hoping that his team have put a spring back in their step with victory at local rivals Bracknell Bees last weekend.

Swindon suffered a fourth straight defeat as they slipped to a 5-2 loss at the hands of Guildford Flames on Saturday but Ryan Aldridge’s side halted the slide with a 4-1 win at Bracknell on Sunday.

Lyle thinks that the Wildcats’ dismal 7-2 loss to the Peterborough Phantoms on October 11 was the only recent defeat in which his team had no right to hold their heads high afterwards.

However, the former Great Britain stopper says that Sunday’s victory should nonetheless restore any diminished confidence amongst his team-mates.

“Obviously we went through a bit of a blip, where unfortunately it was four games in a row, but there’s only one game that sticks out there - the Peterborough game at home, where we didn’t perform,” said Lyle.

“All the other games we felt that we were involved in and should have got something. We weren’t hitting the panic button but we still weren’t getting points on the board either, so each weekend, you see us going lower and lower in the table.

“It was good to get two points (on Sunday) and just that feeling back of winning.

“When you’re on a losing streak like that, it can play on your mind. You start gripping your stick tighter and doing things that you wouldn’t normally do.

“It’s a good bunch of boys in here and we’ve always tried to be positive - even if we’ve lost the game, we’ve tried to take positives out of it.

“Steve Nell, the owner, came in (on Saturday) and said that he understands the sport and he didn’t expect us to win every game this season, so just get back to what you’re capable of and do what you can out there.

“The next three games are at home and you like to think that we’ll have the home advantage there.

“There’s a lot of good teams in this league and anyone can beat anyone on any given night. So as long as we’re turning up and putting 100 per cent in, I think we’ll always be in with a shout of winning the game.”

Goalie Lyle was also pleased with the way that Swindon refused to be dragged down by Bracknell’s roughhousing tactics in the third period of last weekend’s victory.

The Wildcats man added: “Bracknell are one of those teams. They’ve got a tough team and if it’s not going their way, they chuck the dummy out.

“We stayed team tough and made sure no-one was getting bullied out there. If they want to do that all night, then they can because they’re going to be sat in the penalty box and hopefully we can hurt them with goals, rather than fighting back at them.”
