SWINDON Wildcats D-man Shane Moore thinks that the Challenge Cup could present his side with the perfect opportunity to get their hands on some silverware this season.

The Link Centre men racked up their seventh cup victory of the season on Sunday as they beat National League Invicta Dynamos 9-5 in Gillingham and currently find themselves fourth in the South Section table.

With only assignments against the Bracknell Bees and Chelmsford Chieftains remaining, the Wildcats look on-course to make the knockout stages and Moore would love to see his team go all the way. “This season, we want to target the silverware of the cup - I think it’s a very achievable goal for us,” said Moore. “Realistically, the league is a hard one to win because there are a lot of teams with a lot of depth.

“Obviously, we will try hard in every game but I think the cup is definitely something that we can target and potentially win, in the same way that we could do the play-offs as well.

“I’m really impressed with how we’ve performed in the cup and I think we’ve probably got the best chance of silverware that we have had in a long time.

“I’m hopeful we can keep going in this and I think we can beat any team on our day. I think if we carry on playing well in the cup, we could potentially bring some silverware back to Swindon.”

After racing into a dominant 6-1 first period lead at Invicta, Ryan Aldridge’s side took their foot off the gas pedal in a bid to remain respectful towards their lower league hosts.

The Dynamos responded by finding the net four more times and Moore admits that finding the perfect balance in games against National League opposition can be tricky.

“It’s really hard to get up for. Coming to places like that; the guys aren’t really used to rinks and facilities that are that poor,” he said.

“Invicta have a lot of offensive power in their team, so it’s a hard one to do. We stepped off the gas and let them come at us a little bit more and they took advantage of that.

“And fair play to them because that’s what they had to do. They’ve got fans to please and it was a tough game to get back involved in once they got on a roll and started scoring a few goals.

“They’ve got a point to prove and there are a few teams that have been caught out with that this year – I think Chelmsford beat Bracknell and so did they.

“I’m glad to see us back on track.

“It’s a long old road but it’s good to get a few wins under our belt before the Christmas break.”
