RYAN Aldridge was delighted as his Wildcats side put the ghosts of October to bed as they completed a 4-3 victory over Peterborough Phantoms last night.

On their last visit to Cambridgeshire the Cats found themselves four goals down in the first period as they fell to a 4-3 defeat before being beaten the following week at the Link Centre by a 7-3 score-line.

It was the Cats who took the lead last night though when Stevie Whitfield got a rare goal after eight minutes.

A strong Peterborough side came-back into the game and midway through the second period were 3-1 to the good courtesy of strikes from Milan Baranyk, James Ferrara and Luke Ferrara.

But the Cats showed their team spirit which has seen them win their last four games in all competitions.

The Cats pulled a goal back before the start of the third period when Alex Symonds netted in the 31st minute before Aaron Nell made it level on 48 minutes.

It was the captain Jan Kostal who wrapped up the victory for the Wildcats as he fired home from close range with three minutes left on the clock to give the Cats a hard fought win.

“It was a bit of a frustrating one really, especially after going up 1-0 in this building, because we slipped down 3-1,” said Aldridge.

“This one is right up there for sure, especially against a team doing very well and a good in their own building so this is massive.

“We were the best team for the entire 60 minutes I thought, at 3-1 their powerplay goal was a lucky one but it wasn’t like they dominated the game so we didn’t get too down about it.

“We stuck with things and carried on working and we got our rewards. Once we tied it up at 3-3 I thought we would go on and win it, even if it was into overtime and then into a shootout. We always have the upper hand on any team when it comes to that.”

The Cats who were short three first team players with Callum Buglass, Ollie Betteridge and Floyd Taylor away with the GB U20 squad, but despite that they were able to hold on for the victory.

Nineteen-year-old Adam Finlinson played both games and impressed head coach Aldridge as he forced the error from Peterborough goalkeeper Janis Auzins for the Cats third goal.

“We were short benched obviously and for the boys to come out and do this was fantastic, their energy was phenomenal and I though they all stuck to the system perfectly,” added Aldridge.

“Adam Finlinson got his first assist and was excellent again, he’s been great this weekend.

“I thought the referee wasn’t great tonight and that a few decisions didn’t go our way, a few unsafe decisions, but the boys struck to it and there were some massive character goals.”
