THE SWINDON Wildcats continued their electrifying run of form by ruthlessly putting Milton Keynes Lightning to the sword in Buckinghamshire tonight.

Ryan Aldridge’s men racked up their sixth successive victory in all competitions as they decimated the Lightning 11-3 in their own building, and all despite trailing 2-0 in the first period.

After a cagey opening, the hosts rushed into the ascendancy midway through the first period as Blaz Emersic found the net twice in quick succession.

First, the Lightning man fired in a low effort on the follow-up after Stevie Lyle had beaten away Leigh Jamieson’s effort before the Slovenian was allowed too much space minutes later and accepted the gift, cracking home from distance.

But Swindon showed that they also had the ability to fire in two goals in a matter of minutes and quickly tied up the scores in the blink of an eye.

After Grant McPherson was sin-binned for tripping, the visitors patiently worked the puck around on the powerplay and Aaron Nell smashed home a slapshot to reduce the deficit.

Then just a few moments later, Swindon stalked forward with purpose and Adam Harding teed up Jan Kostal to smack in a fizzing strike from out near the left flank.

The clash settled back down for the remainder of opening period, right up until the Wildcats took the lead for the first time with just a over two minutes to go, with Jonas Hoog knocking home from close range to make it 3-2 shortly after re-entering the fray from the sin bin.

The home side went looking to hit back in the second period and after Hoog had been sin-binned for a punishing hit on Lewis Christie, Chris Wiggins almost restored parity as he hit the frame of the goal with a shot on the turn but Swindon stormed down the other end and Tomasz Malasinski steamed an effort into the top corner.

The Wildcats’ fourth goal seemingly sparked a collapse at the back from the home side and as the Wildcats got the bit between their teeth and quickly took advantage, Henri Sandvik confidently slotting home past netminder Stephen Wall and Hoog tidily tucking away from close range.

The Swindon onslaught showed no signs of abating and despite the Lightning replacing their goalie, the visitors extended their lead in a flash through Malasinski’s powerful blast from range and Sandvik’s second of the evening, with the Finnish forward getting the final touch on Kostal’s beautiful disguised pass.

As the hosts looked to restore some pride early in the third period, Milan Kostourek became the second MK player to strike the post but with just under five minutes gone, captain Kostal got his team into double figures, blasting into the net to make it 10-2.

Past the midway point, Kostourek danced his way through two challenges but Lyle stood up well to make a save but the home fans were finally handed something to shout about as Ross Bowers smashed home from close range to reduce the deficit.

But Swindon quickly restored their eight-goal advantage as Sam Bullas got in on the rout, firing home from Harding’s delivery to take the visitors’ tally to 11 and put the gloss on their biggest victory of the season so far.
