SWINDON Wildcats D-man Alex Symonds reckons his side have it in them to go all the way in the English Premier League Challenge Cup after progressing to the semi-finals last weekend.

A 6-2 victory at National League Chelmsford Chieftains on Sunday secured the Link Centre outfit’s place in the knockout stages.

Ryan Aldridge’s side finished level on 22 points with Milton Keynes Lightning and Guildford Flames at the top of the South section but came out top of the pile after head-to-head records between the three table-toppers became the deciding factor.

Home and away semi-final legs against Manchester Phoenix, who finished second in the North group, are yet to be pencilled in to the fixture list.

But with Swindon’s fellow Premier League rivals Telford Tigers and Guildford set to meet in the corresponding semi, Symonds is daring to dream of a cup final.

“We’ll be playing Manchester next, so I think we’ve got a really good chance - and we can beat every team in the league,” said the 26-year-old.

“I can’t wait. We’ve beaten Telford three times and we’ve beaten Manchester so we’ll be looking forward to the final if we get through.”

Getting over the line didn’t prove as straightforward as Symonds and his teammates would have liked, with Chelmsford proving a difficult obstacle to surpass as Sunday’s clash struggled to spring into life before Swindon eventually got the job done.

Symonds added: “It’s an ENL team, isn’t it? We’re used to playing against the likes of Telford and Guildford, so to come down and play is quite tough really.

“You’ve just got to work on your individual stuff and make sure you play your own game, really.

“You don’t know what kind of systems they play or what systems we play compared to them. You just don’t know what to expect really.

“It’s more like a scrimmage out there sometimes - a bit scrappy - but it’s like anything really; you’ve just got to work hard and the goals will come, and that’s it.

“Guys were working hard but the goals weren’t coming and Aldy came in after the first period and gave everyone a little shout and made sure we came out and played a little better, which we did in the third.”
