TWO young Cats have stepped up to be part of the pride as Michael Stratford and Toms Rutkis sign two year deals at the Link Centre.

The pair, who are products of the Okanagan Hockey Academy, have impressed over the last couple of years as they have been given their chance to shine in the first team.

Wildcats head coach Stevie Lyle revealed last week that 18-year-old Stratford was set to sign on and 17-year-old Rutkis has joined him.

"It's a great feeling to have come through the ranks of the OHA and be able to sign my first contract with the Wildcats," said Stratford after signing the deal.

"It's made even better knowing that I started out in the junior ranks of the club and all I ever wanted to do was play for the senior team.

"I've no doubt that the coaching and experience I've gained from being part of the Okanagan Hockey Academy has helped get me to where I am today.

"I'm so grateful that the Wildcats management has seen enough in me to offer the deal and it's an honour to be part of what is being built here in Swindon and I will continue to work my hardest to repay the faith the club have shown in me."

Latvian born Rutkis joined Stratford last season in representing the GB Under 18s and Under 20s has believes he is a better player from experiencing 'the best' junior hockey.

"I'm glad that I'll be playing for the Wildcats for the upcoming season," Rutkis said.

"It just feels right to be here after being part of the Swindon hockey setup for the last two seasons.

"Having the best junior hockey experience with OHA, I also had a chance to have a taste of Wildcats action last season and I think I proved that I'm ready to step up and be part of the roster."

"I believe it is going to be a great season for me and the Wildcats."

The addition of the young pair now means Lyle has recruited six of his team for next season and has said that despite their age he is expecting big things from both players in the upcoming campaign.

"I'm very excited about both boys joining the Wildcats next season," he said.

"They are both hard-working forwards that will battle for the team each night.

"They both have size and good hockey sense so I will be expecting big things from them each game."
