SAM Bullas is warning that the Swindon Wildcats won’t be able to rest on their laurels for even a second this season if they’re to make their mark in the English Premier League.

Despite suffering a disappointing 6-3 defeat to Peterborough Phantoms in their season-opener last Saturday, the Wildcats bounced back in sublime style by vanquishing reigning league champions Telford Tigers 4-2 on Sunday in their own back yard.

Sunday’s Telford triumph was built on a monumental effort and forward Bullas reckons that his team have to rediscover that spirit in every match, even when last season’s basement boys Bracknell Bees, who Stevie Lyle’s men hammered 12-2 in pre-season, visit the Link Centre this weekend.

“You can never relax in this league, especially this year.

“You talk about Bracknell, who had a tough year last year, but they’ve really stepped it up,” said Bullas.

“Every teams has. Every team has brought in players so there’s not going to be an easy ride this year. No team are going to be pushovers.

“We need to step it up like we did against Telford in every game and when you play like that, you can still get beaten, even by the lower teams.

“You’ve got to make sure you play your game and take it them every time.

“Guys are getting faster and the league is getting faster and that means that the league’s becoming more physical because there’s less time.

“We caused Telford a few problems as well last year – out style of play doesn’t get on with them too well.

“A lot of teams lose to them but they seem to be a team we can beat every game, so we’ve got to just keep the momentum going.

“They did win the league last year but that counts for nothing this year. We’ve got to make sure that we play like that every game.

“We all got together and pulled together and Stevie Lyle had a fantastic game – he was solid between the pipes and that’s the least we expect from him now.”

Bullas added: “It’s a tough one because we’ve got to keep the momentum going now but we can’t get too high. It’s one game and it’s early on in the season.

“We’re one and one right now so we’ve got to make sure that we take the positives from that and get rid of the negatives, and we can keep building on that every week.

“We’ll work on things in training in the week to try and fix a few problems in our game and come back stronger week-by-week.”
