IT may have not been the vintage performance that Swindon Wildcats player/coach Aaron Nell was looking for but he was happy to claim another four-point weekend with a 3-2 win over Bracknell Bees on Sunday.

Tomasz Malasinski gave the visitors a first-period lead before Ivan Antonov pulled the hosts back level in the second period.

A brace from Nell before the second break put Swindon in a commanding position but a late goal from Connor Thompson made for an anxious final two minutes.

Swindon held on for the victory and stretched their English Premier League winning run to four games in the process, but Nell knew his below-par side were fortunate on the night.

“It wasn’t the best game tonight but we will put it behind us and we got the win. That is four in a row now and we can build on that,” he said.

“The whole game was flat. It was a very poor hockey game and we were just happy to get the two points.

“They worked hard but we shouldn’t be in a hockey game like that with the players in our team.

“Bracknell have had a go and if we were playing against any other team tonight we would have lost.

“That is nothing against Bracknell, they were only playing with one import and that is tough.

“We’ve got to take it when it comes and it’s another four-point weekend and we’ve got to keep it going now.”

Having finished January with a strong run of results, Nell is hoping they can convert that into more good performances when they face a run of games that could define their season, starting with a home tie against Guildford Flames on Saturday.

“The start was a struggle and we had some really poor games but we have come out of it and shown some good character,” he added.

“We’ve had an up and down month but we have had a great end and we are there or there abouts.

“That is the best streak we have been on all year and we have to take it into next Saturday.

“If we want to go up the league then we have to beat the teams above us and around us.”
