SWINDON Panthers got their hands on the Summer Cup by triumphing 7-1 over Streatham Chiefs in a winner-takes-all match at the Link Centre on Sunday.

Both teams tested the goalies early on but the deadlock as broken midway through the first period when Balient found Scott Gough to fire home.

The Chiefs were quickly back on par when Jonathan Luffarelli levelled for the visitors in the 12th minute.

The Panthers came out in the second period and continued to put Streatham under pressure before restoring their lead midway through the 26th minute when Gareth Endicott slotted home a well-placed shot.

The hosts stretched their lead five minutes later through Gary Loveday, with Gough getting the assist.

The Chiefs came back strongly and some excellent netminding from Jamie Thomson kept them at bay.

With only three minutes of the period remaining, the Panthers broke again to make it 4-1, with Loveday firing home his second of the match before Rob Croucher made it 5-1 as the two sides went into the interval.

The Panthers came out for the final period with a plan to close out the game for the title.

However, they ran into penalty trouble throughout the session, giving the visitors more than enough chances to claw back some goals, but Thomson and the defensive core repelled their attacks.

Loveday went on to complete his hat-trick for the Panthers’ sixth of the game before Dave Lovejoy broke down the right to make it 7-1 as the hosts recorded their biggest win over the Chiefs.

The Panthers will face the Chiefs again in the play-off final at the Link Centre on August 21 (5pm).
