BOBBY Chamberlain kept his composure to secure a penalty shootout win as Swindon Wildcats left Milton Keynes with a solitary point.

The scores were level at the end of the first period when Max Birbraer saw his seventh minute goal cancelled out by a James Griffin effort.

Lewis Hook’s close-range flick had the hosts in front for the first time in the 24th minute but Birbraer got his second of the game with less than two minutes left of the second period to haul the visitors back level.

However, neither team could clinch the victory in regulation time and, after five-straight misses in the penalty shootout, Chamberlain took his shot early to beat Stevie Lyle.

The first chance of the game fellow Milton Keynes’ way when the loose puck fell to Leigh Jamieson and he drove at Lyle’s net.

However, the Swindon netminder stayed big to deny him but the pressure from Lee Richardson from behind was deemed illegal and he was sent to the bin.

Despite being short-handed, Swindon went down the other end and nearly broke the deadlock themselves when Przemyslaw Odrobny had to pull off a good save to deny Jan Kostal, Tomasz Malasinski was on hand for the follow-up but his effort was deflected over.

In the eighth minute, with Frantisek Barkrlik, elbows, and Griffin, slashing, both in the bin, and Swindon back to full strength, the visitors got the breakthrough.

Jonas Höög, played in by Ryan Aldridge, drilled the puck to the right of Odrobny's goal and Birbraer was on hand to flick it home first time.

Swindon’s goal came under immense pressure as a result of Lightning falling behind and it told in the 15th minute.

With Michael Farn having already missed a sitter at the back post following some good work by Chamberlain down the left, there was panic in the Swindon ranks.

As a result, Griffin was afforded too much time just inside the blue line and he made no mistake as he found the gap between Lyle and his left post, with a delayed penalty call on Stevie Whitfield for holding.

Lightning found themselves ahead less than four minutes into the second period when Farn drove the puck towards goal from deep and Hook was unmarked in front of Lyle's net to flick the puck home with skill.

Swindon had their backs to the wall half way through the period when Kyle Smith, boarding, and Matt Selby, abusing an official, both headed to the bin but fantastic defence from Stevie Whitfield and Neil Liddiard saw them come through unscathed.

Swindon were back on level terms before the ned of the period as Thomasz Malasinski fired the puck across goal from the right and it fell kindly to Birbraer who kept his composure to fire home from close range.

After a frantic first-two periods, the pace slowed down in the third as Swindon struggled to get out of their third, with Lyle the busier of the two netminders.

Floyd Taylor saw his evening come to a premature end when he was given a two plus 10 penalty for a check from behind with eight minutes to go.

Swindon survived being a man short and almost clinched the tie with Milan Baranyk in the bin for tripping with five minutes on the clock.

However, an unbelievable save from Odrobny denied Aldridge from close range before he was back to his feet and diving to his right to deny Birbraer and take the game to overtime.

Odrobny was in more fine form in overtime as he denied Sam Bullas and Richardson with two superb saves.

That took the game to penalty shots and with Birbraer, Höög and Kostal all missing the target for Swindon, and Holli and Emersic missing for the hosts, Chamberlain stepped up and fired down the middle to secure the extra point.
