Swindon Wildcats signed off 2016 with a win as they swept the Guildford Flames to one side at the Link Centre.

Jan Kostal ,Thomasz Malasinski, Phil Hill and Stevie Whitfield  were on the on target for the Cats as they sealed a  4-2 home victory.

The game got off to a scrappy start, but it was the hosts who were able to break the deadlock and take the initiative.

Captain  Kostal was the man to get the ball rolling as he bundled the puck into the net in the seventh minute.

As Swindon looked to get settled they were dealt a blow as Max Birbraer was handed five plus game for a high check a minute later.

However despite the extensive power play, the Wildcats did well to kill the penalty as the first period ended with them holding a slender lead.

Their lead was then doubled in the second period as Malasinski made the most of Swindon’s power-play by slotting the puck through a crowd in the 21st minute.

The Cats looked comfortable with their lead until the Flames hit back against the run of play with a goal of their own on the half an hour mark.

David Savage got them back into contention when he too fired through a crowd with a shot that evaded everyone, including Swindon’s net minder Stevie Lyle.

The rest of the period saw Swindon against the ropes momentarily as the Flames looked to get back once again.

But Lyle was enjoying another fine performance as the Cats grew in confidence to head into the final period with a one goal lead.

The newest addition to the Wildcats roster, Hill, showed he was alert early in the third period when he latched onto a loose puck before powering it home to score his first home goal.

With their two goal lead restored, Whitfield got among the action as he compounded the lead by adding a fourth in the 43th minute thanks to a clever assist from Jonas Hoog.

Despite the Wildcats holding the lead, the Flames grabbed a late consolation through Marek  Maslonka on the power play with eight seconds left to play  as Neil Liddiard served a two minute penalty for high sticking, as it ended 4-2
