SWINDON Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell heaped praise on his side as they rounded off 2016 with a 4-2 win.

Jan Kostal started proceeding with an opener in the first period, which also saw Max Birbraer given a match penalty for a check to the head, before Tomasz Malasinski added a second in the 21st minute.

Wildcats entered the third period with a slender 2-1 advantage, but that was stretched thanks to goals from Stevie Whitfield and Phil Hill as they sealed the win.

Nell, who is sidelined along with Callum Buglass, Matt Selby, Toms Rutkis and Ollie Stone, believes his side have turned a corner in the last few weeks.

“Now we need to keep pushing forward, the team are in a good spot right now and everyone is playing,” said Nell.

“To be where we are now, compared to where we were two weeks ago is full credit to the players.

“They deserve a bit of success but now they need to push forward and keep on moving up the league.”

The win makes it two from two for Cats following last weekend’s 3-1 win over Basingstoke Bison.

Nell also highlighted the performance of Hill, who registered his first home goal in the 4-2 win since joining from Telford Tigers in early December “Since I have been injured we have tried to sign a few players, but he (Hill) has been exactly what we needed,” the Cats chief said.

“He brings little things and you know what you are getting from him every night."

In previous weeks Nell had been critical of Wildcats inability to finish teams off, however, after this triumph, he believes his troops showed they are more than capable of doing so.

“We had a flat last 10 minutes in the second period where they (Guildford) came back into the game, but we started quickly in the third,” he said.

“We never looked back, that is the first time all year where we have really beaten a decent team, they worked extremely hard, it’s not a coincidence we have turned that corner.”
