SWINDON Wildcats owner Steve Nell believes there is no reason why his side can’t elevate themselves from their current English Premier League standing in the final stretch of their league campaign.

The Cats, who are coached by Nell’s son Aaron, came agonisingly close to securing a semi-final spot in the League Cup earlier this term but came up just a point short as they fell to defeat in their final game at Basingstoke Bison.

Now, Swindon sit seventh in the league standings, 13 points clear of eighth-placed Sheffield Steeldogs but only nine points off third-placed Peterborough Phantoms, who are the visitors to the Link Centre this Saturday.

Swindon have been in fine form of late and last Sunday’s defeat away to Telford Tigers was their first in their last five outings.

And with 20 games of the regular season still to play, Wildcats GM Nell sees no reason why his side can’t climb the table and give themselves a more favourable draw come the play-offs.

“Getting into the play-offs is the goal but for us now, it is about consolidating,” said Nell.

“We have played some tough teams, like Milton Keynes and Basingtoke, and it is about consolidating that now and starting to move up that table.

“When you look at the table, there are not that many points between third and seventh, so we’re not far away.

“A bit of consistency is what we are looking for and that will give us the chance to move up and once you are in that pack, who knows.

“It can change week-to-week, it is very tight there from third down.

“I think the top two are probably away with it and they will fight that out, but between three and seven, that is pretty open, and we’ll do our best to try and be closer to the top of that pack than the bottom.”
